🌊🚀 Who We AreThe Cruise Globe is building the world's leading digital platform for cruise travellers. At its core, The Cruise Globe is a data business. Our platform enables users to log cruises, visualise exact routes, track distances travelled, and explore detailed statistics about their journeys. As the product expands across new features and revenue streams, the quality, structure, and scalability of our data systems are fundamental to everything we do.We operate a small but experienced data function today, and we are now investing in a full-time hire to take our data platform to the next stage of maturity.Requirements🚀 The OpportunityWe are hiring a Data Engineer to help build, scale, and maintain the data foundations of The Cruise Globe. This role exists because our data systems have reached an inflection point. We have an exceptional volume of data and strong foundations, but the business now needs more structure, automation, and scalability to support increasingly data-heavy product features. You will work closely with our existing senior data engineer and alongside product and engineering teams to design and operate production-grade data systems. Databricks is a foundational part of our stack, and this role will be central to shaping how it is used as the business grows. This is not a reporting or dashboard-focused role. It is a hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys solving complex data challenges, and building durable systems that product teams can rely on with confidence.Success in this role is defined by:The product team's ability to ship data-heavy features with confidenceData becoming more central to the user experience and value propositionA clear step-change in scalability, structure, and automationReduced reliance on manual or ad-hoc data processes🧭 What You'll Be DoingBuild and Scale Core Data SystemsDesign, implement, and maintain scalable data systems using DatabricksHelp migrate and consolidate existing data workflows into a more robust architectureEnsure data structures are well-modelled, consistent, and fit for long-term useSupport Data-Driven Product FeaturesWork closely with product and engineering teams to enable data-heavy featuresBuild reliable pipelines that power user-facing statistics and insightsEnsure correctness, performance, and consistency as product usage scalesSolving complex data challengesBuilding pipelines to handle and interpret large volumes of geospatial dataCombining multiple geospatial data sources (ship tracks, port data, user locations) to deliver new insightsDesign, develop and improve algorithms handing geospatial and time series dataAutomation and ReliabilityIdentify manual or fragile processes and automate themImprove the reliability and maintainability of existing data workflowsReduce operational overhead through thoughtful system designCollaborate Across the BusinessWork as part of a small, senior data function with shared ownershipCollaborate closely with product and engineering teams day to dayContribute ideas and improvements rather than waiting for tightly scoped tickets🧠 Core Requirements (Non-Negotiable)Strong experience as a Data Engineer in a production environmentSolid working knowledge of Databricks as a core data platformProficiency in Python and SQL (including Postgres or similar)Experience working with cloud infrastructure, ideally AWSStrong data modelling skills and a structured approach to system designAn engineering mindset to solving complex data challengesExperience automating data workflows and improving system reliabilityComfortable working in a startup environment with pace and ambiguityClear, logical thinking and strong problem-solving abilityEffective use of LLMs to support reasoning, debugging, and development through tightly scoped prompts🌍 Nice to HaveExposure to GIS or spatial data conceptsExperience working with product-led or consumer-facing platformsFamiliarity with maritime, travel, or geospatial datasetsWho This Role Is ForThis role is for someone who:Enjoys solving complex engineering challenges, not just building infrastructureCares about structure, correctness, and long-term maintainabilityWants to work where data is central to the product experienceIs comfortable operating in a small, high-trust teamIs a few years into their career and ready for more responsibilityEnjoys not having rigidly defined work or being highly siloedThrives evolving systems and incomplete informationDoesn't want a BI or dashboard-only positionBenefits🎁 Why Join Us?Data at the Core: Data is fundamental to our product and strategy, not an afterthoughtReal Engineering Work: Build systems that directly power user-facing featuresExperienced Team: Work alongside a highly experienced senior data engineerAutonomy: Design and implement systems, not just execute pre-defined tasksRoom to Grow: Opportunity to take increasing ownership of the data platform over timeRemote First: Work remotely with occasional collaboration in LondonCompetitive Package: Salary up to £70k with scope to grow as the role evolves
